NA Romance author Tani Hanes has wanted to write since she was 10. A substitute teacher, she finally picked up her pen forty years later and says, “If you want to write, don’t wait as long as I did, it’s pointless, and very frustrating!” Living in the Shallows is the first book in her series UK Crush.
Could you share your background as an author?
Well, I don’t really have a background as an author :o)–this is my first foray into writing, and I wrote seven so I really jumped right in! Before this, I was a scribbler, wrote for the local paper covering my kids’ swim meets, if you can believe it. And I wrote my way out of speeding tickets lol. Twice. I was a good explainer!
The story behind Living in the Shallows? My favorite boy band was going on a “break”, and this made me and my students really sad! I wanted to write something for them, that would make us all feel better, you know, about boys who really loved each other, who really loved the heroine. Like REALLY.
These books could be Young Adult, though the first ends with a really explicit love scene. The following books carry on in that vein, so maybe New Adult? Depends on the adult, I guess! Anyone who’s wanted to love and be loved by nice guys who make music.
What do you use your mailing list for?
I’m so new to this that I don’t have a mailing list, just readers who became friends!
I kind of have a website, and I suppose if I ever gathered enough people to *create* a mailing list, I’d just send out news about my writing, or extra writing about my characters. I’ve had a lot of kids ask what happens next, so that would be a priority.
Do you have any advice for aspiring or new authors?
Engage with your audience, as much as you can. In this day and age, everyone wants to know things, and feel like they know you personally. Social media is amazing for this, as there aren’t really any barriers, except what you put up for yourself.
